Guest Post - Ben Armstrong, Nature Scotland Intern, Sept 2024

This internship was only my second time on the Isle of Mull, and what a brilliant time I had ! It is amazing to be in an environment where all day is surrounded by people who love and care about animals and are so passionate about the wildlife on Mull.

I arrived on the Isle of Mull in early September, where I was straight into the action, going on my first private tour ! My first tour was with Theo who has absolutely incredible knowledge of any animal and says so many interesting facts about the Isle of Mull, the guest and I were just in awe. It was a great first tour and nice way to be introduced to spotting eagles and trying to identify the key differences.

The weather then really started to warm up, even putting on shorts with some of the tours ! My next couple of tours where with Klay and his enthusiasm and knowledge was wonderful always making sure the guests are having a great time and every single tour was different because of the great guests from all over the world seeing Scotland's big 6 on the majority of days will never ever get old especially the Lord of the wings, the golden eagle !

While I was in the Isle of Mull I was staying at Tobermory campsite, this was a really nice place with great facilities and was hearing an epic traveller's story and even seeing amazing wildlife from my tent tawny owls, ravens and even a hedgehog !

Luckily, I was invited to join sea life mull and Indy and Jimmy were showing me the ropes of even how to stand at some points. This was my first time on a boat, and I was speechless when I was seeing storm petrols, common dolphins, great skuas and many more. It was definitely a highlight of the trip for me !

I could not suggest enough to do an internship, I learnt so much in such a short period of time by just being out in the wild everyday seeing first hand some of the things I’ve been reading about online.

Finally, the nature Scotland team are all truly amazing people and always keep your best interest at heart, I had Ewan messaging me checking up on me, asking if I was okay and asking how the tours were every day, an unforgettable experience that I would love to do again !
